Day 13 of 365: In the Spirit and In Truth

Greetings, Precious Family:

May the Peace of the Lord be with you always.

This evening, I was praying on what to write the devotion about, so I got myself still and quiet and just began to listen. After a few minutes of silence, I was led, by the Holy Spirit, to the Gospel of John, specifically the fourth chapter, when Jesus is leaving Judea and heading back to Galilee but he had to go through Samaria to get to Galilee.

Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well and gives her a prophetic word regarding her life. She recognized Jesus as a prophet but did not fully understand that he was the fulfillment of scriptures (The Living Water). She was somewhat confused because tradition said that if Jewish people wanted to worship that they needed to worship in Jerusalem. How could Jesus speak of worshipping God in the middle of Samaria. This was his response to her regarding how and where to worship:

Scripture of the Day

John 4:19-24
New International Version

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Let Us Pray

Spirit of the Living God, thank you for dwelling with us like only you can. Thank you for teaching us how to worship you. May we forever be sensitive to your presence and to your move. May we never become complacent or comfortable if you are not in the midst of our worship. Thank you for reminding us that worshipping you does not require us to be in a place or building, but instead, true worship is led by you, and it unlocks and opens the secret things of God. It is in the precious name of Jesus that we lift this prayer to heaven. May it be a fragrant offering.

And we let it be…And so it is…

Amen, Amen, and Amen
